A video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has gone viral on social media.

In the video, he could be seen asking who and what Bharat Mata is. “Everyone hails Bharat Mata, but who is Bharat Mata? What is Bharat Mata?” he asks.

Many BJP leaders are also seen taking a dig while sharing this video.

Fact check

SouthCheck found the claim to be misleading.

On searching with the keywords “Who is Bharat Mata, Rahul Gandhi”, we found a full video of the incident published by HW News English on November 20, 2023. In the video, he says, “We raise this slogan called “Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. I raise this slogan; you raise this slogan. But who is this ‘Bharat Mata’? This ‘Bharat Mata’ is our land. This ‘Bharat Mata’ are the people of this country, the rich, the poor, the old, everyone. So, I asked a single question in the Parliament, since we raise this slogan every day, do we know who this ‘Bharat Mata’ is? Who are these people? What is their population? How many of them are Adivasis? Dalits? Backward? Poor? If

we do not know this, what is the point of raising the slogan of ‘Bharat Mata’? This country would need to do revolutionary activity. The country will need to conduct a caste-based census for this.”

We found the full video on Rahul Gandhi's original YouTube channel, published on November 19, 2023. At around 1:08 timestamp, we can hear Rahul Gandhi making the statement, which has gone viral on social media.

The Telegraph also published the report. The report quoted Rahul Gandhi, which said, “"We all say, 'Bharat Mata ki jai'. But what does that mean? Who is Bharat Mata? The people of India," Rahul, who addressed election meetings at Dausa and Bundi in Rajasthan, said.”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is edited with a misleading claim.
