A video is going viral on social media reportedly showing vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar greeting prime minister Narendra Modi with folded hands, who doesn’t return the gesture.

Many, including Babul Supriyo, minister of Information Technology and Electronics of West Bengal, also shared the video, claiming PM Modi did not give due regard to the VP.

Babul Supriyo shared the video with a caption that read, “On a diff note.. Will Honble  @VPIndia of the country & @rajyasabha Speaker Shri. Dhankar be ashamed of acts of such sycophancy where his ‘Namaskar’ is not even reciprocated by the Honble PM @narendramodi  Ji? Will Honble Pm care to advise Honble VP Sir to at least not display such ‘complete submission’ at least in Public?? I am sceptical !! (sic)”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the video was edited to remove PM Modi’s greeting.

A Google Reverse Image search of the video led to the YouTube channel of Mirror Now. The video, published on December 8, 2023, was titled ‘Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Trolled For Greeting PM Modi, RS Chair Hits Back.’

The video was about the controversy regarding the way VP Jagdeep Dhankhar greeted PM Modi, many claiming that it was unbecoming of his position. However, the video shows Modi greeting the VP first with a namaste to which Dhankhar responds. Modi’s greeting was edited out from the viral video.

The video’s caption read, “After a video clip posted by the Congress party’s social media accounts went viral on December 6, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar voiced his “pain and anguish” on December 7. The Rajya Sabha Chairman is seen bowing in the video as he greets Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Supriya Shrinate, the social media in-charge for the Congress, posted the video on her platforms without offering a remark. Dhankhar has argued in his defence that humility is the only thing that can uplift the dignity of a constitutional post.”

ANI also published the video on December 8. In the video, it is evident that PM Modi was the first to greet Dhankhar. In the video, clarifying his way of greeting, the VP says in Rajya Sabha, “Bowing and greeting is my habit, and I do not see who is in front of me.”

However, many including political leaders shared only a part of the video where Jagdeep Dhankhar was greeting the PM and claimed that Dhankhar was bowing too low in front of PM Modi.
