Mexican security forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, aka El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, on February 22, during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.

His death, one of the most significant blows to organised crime in years, triggered violent reprisals across several states as cartel gunmen set roadblocks and torched vehicles.

In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which many vehicles are seen on fire. The text embedded in the video reads, “The country grinds to a halt, people confined to their homes, and the end of the Mexican drug mafia.” (Translated from Hindi)

Those sharing it claim it shows violence in Mexico after the death of El Mencho.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Following the killing of drug lord El Mancho in a military operation in Mexico, in which the US is said to have played a key role, widespread violence and unrest have spread across the country. Gang members have carried out numerous attacks and arson attacks, disrupting life across the country and forcing people to stay in their homes. Mexico has long been a major hub for drug trafficking, with the US as its main market. Americans are addicted to cocaine, which is produced by the Mexican drug mafia.” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is old and shows violence in Nepal.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an Instagram account, Jamuadhakabihar, on September 11, 2025.

The video was shared with a caption suggesting that the video was of the ‘Gen Z’ protest in Nepal’s Kathmandu.

We also found that the same video was shared by a YouTube channel, Lokantar TV, on September 9, 2025.

In the video, at around the 5:01-minute timestamp, we can see the same video as the viral video. The caption suggests that the video was of the Gen Z protest in Nepal. The caption read, “Genji Movement: Protesters enter Singha Durbar.”

We found that the screenshot of the video was also shared by India TV on September 11, 2025.

The report associated with the video suggested that it was of Gen Z protest in Nepal. According to the report, in Nepal’s 2025 Gen Z protests, youth-led demonstrations against a social media ban and corruption turned violent. Protesters stormed the parliament, set government buildings, vehicles and political leaders’ homes on fire, and clashed with security forces. At least dozens were killed and hundreds injured as arson and vandalism spread across Kathmandu and beyond, forcing the prime minister to resign amid nationwide unrest.

Therefore, the claim is false.
