Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The viral image is from 2015 showing Iran attacking the replica of a US aircraft carrier.

On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the same image uploaded by CNN on February 26, 2015.

The caption associated with the image read, “Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard troops attack a mock-up of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz during a military drill in the Strait of Hormuz in Iran on Wednesday, February 25.”

The incident was also reported by DailyMail UK on February 25, 2015. The report was titled ‘Iran makes a huge show of blowing up ‘US aircraft carrier’ in explosive TV spectacle’.

The report stated that Iranian officials attacked dozens of speedboats that were a replica of a US aircraft carrier and televised it on their national TV. The drill was named Great Prophet 9 and was held near the Strait of Hormuz.

The image was also published by The Guardian on February 25, 2015. The title read: ‘Iran’s Revolutionary Guard attacks mock US aircraft carrier in naval drills.’

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
