Fact Check: Viral video of lightning striking mountain is from Guatemala, not Himachal

A video is being widely shared on social media in which lightning strikes a mountain peak.

The video is shared with a caption stating that the viral video shows a lightning strike in Himachal Pradesh’s Bijli Mahadev temple.

A social media user shared the video with the caption, “You will see this scene in Bijlee Mahadev Kullu, Himachal Pradesh.”

Fact Check

On scrolling through the comment section of the viral post, we found that a user had uploaded a link to a YouTube Short suggesting that the video is of a lightning strike in a Guatemala volcano.

The video was uploaded on May 13, 2024, with the caption, “A thunderstorm coincided with an eruption of the Volcan del Fuego near the city of Antigua in Guatemala on Sunday, April 28. It further suggested that the video was filmed by Johan Wolterink and shows a lightning bolt striking out from the volcano’s crater and illuminating the sky as the volcano was emitting thick plumes of smoke and ash.”

We also found that a YouTube channel, ABC 7 Chicago had also uploaded the video on May 14, 2024, and mentioned that the video was of a thunderstorm that coincided with an eruption of the Volcan del Fuego near the city of Antigua, Guatemala.

CTV News had also uploaded the video with the same caption.
