 A CCTV video showing several women taking shelter under tables during a powerful tremor has gone viral on social media. Those sharing the video claim it captures the moment a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s northeast coast on June 25. The footage has been widely shared with captions linking it to the recent quake off the coast of Iwate Prefecture.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Powerful 6.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan. A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Thursday morning. The powerful tremor was captured on CCTV.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Myanmar 2025.

On a Google reverse Image Search, we found that the video was shared on Facebook on May 16, 2025.

The video is shared with a caption that reads, “Horrific images emerge from Myanmar earthquake: The earthquake in Myanmar was captured on a supermarket security camera. Two earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude, struck Myanmar on March 28th. The intensity of the earthquake was recorded by a supermarket security camera. The latest figures indicate that the death toll has risen to 3,354 and the number of injured to 4,850. The earthquakes were strongly felt in neighbouring countries Thailand and China.”

We found that the same video was shared by a Facebook user on May 22, 2025. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Myanmar daki 7.7 Lik Depremin Şiddeti Bir Marketin Güvenlik Kamerasında.”

We further found that the same video was also shared by a Turkish website, TGR Thaber, with a caption that reads, “A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, a Southeast Asian country, on March 28. The earthquake was felt in China and Bangkok, Thailand, and claimed many lives. Following the disaster, new footage of the earthquake has emerged. The moments recorded in a supermarket are horrifying.”

The video is CCTV footage and the date on the video reads March 28, 2025.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
