Social media users are widely sharing a video showing a human body inside a pond.

The video is being shared with a claim that a Hindu Chhatra League student was killed in Bangladesh. The video is shared to insinuate the atrocities against the minorities in Bangladesh.

 A social media user shared the video with the caption, “Chhatra League leader Sumon was brutally killed by terrorists. The terrorists left the bodies under the bridge in Langalbanda Brahmaputra river.”  (Archive)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found the claim to be misleading. We found that the victim in the viral video is a Muslim. And there is no communal angle to the murder incident.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found that Business Bangladesh uploaded a screenshot of the same video on January 28, 2025. The report suggested that Baidyerbazar Naval Police recovered the body of a young man named Nayan (30) with his hands and feet tied, in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Sonargaon Upazila.

The body was recovered from the Brahmaputra River under the Langalband Bridge in the Darikandi area on the southeast side of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Sonargaon Upazila.

 The incident was also reported by Ajkerpatrika on January 28, 2025. The report identified the deceased as Nayan Hossain, the son of late Joynal Abedin of Tikkapara area of Mohammadpur in the capital.  He was an auto-rickshaw driver. The report further suggested that Nayan was killed after a man posing as a passenger tried to hijack the auto-rickshaw.

The incident was also reported by Ajkerpatrika on January 28, 2025. The report identified the deceased as Nayan Hossain, the son of late Joynal Abedin of Tikkapara area of Mohammadpur in the capital.

Hence, we can ascertain that there is no communal angle to the murder incident.
