A post requesting everyone to give Neomec 10 MG tablet to any dog ailing with skin conditions to help them cure is being widely shared on social media.

A stray dog may struggle with the number of skin conditions as they live on streets along with various microorganisms like flee, bacteria, ticks and worms etc. Stray animals quickly pick up any skin infection. When you see a spray struggling with a severe skin allergy you might feel like helping the poor dog. But can you blindly give a dog Neomec tablet without any doctor’s prescription?

Let's find out.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found the claim to be missing context.

Neomec Vet Tablet is an anti-worm medicine. It is used for the treatment of worm infection. It contains ivermectin as its active ingredient. It is used in the treatment of worm infections in your intestines. Neomec Vet Tablet should be taken as directed by the doctor and in doses and duration as prescribed. It should be taken before food. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to it or you are suffering from any heart, liver or kidney diseases.

Through our investigation, we found multiple posts shared by social media users urging people to avoid or not give stray dogs or cats this purported tablets unnecessary.  One such facebook post reads, ‘Neomac is just like everyone using blindly now a days,have some study on it before using any drug or consult a vet to know the dose,there is absolutely no need to give Neomac for small scratch.;

 We further contacted Dr. V Kadambari, vet at Olive's Pet Clinic to debunk the claim.

She said, ‘The skin in dogs have limited ways that they can react to different diseases. So the diseases are plenty but the way in which the skin reacts is limited. There will be redness which will eventually turn black. There will be then itching or crust formations, so there will be about 10-12 days in which it can react. Now where the different lies is in understanding, what combination of these issues are leading to skin problems. That's how we recognise what is causing skin problem. The dog in the viral image that you sent it could be mange, it could also be flee causing problem. The problem is that both these diseases cause severe itching. Neomec can kill mites that is scabies which cause mange but it does not kill flees. So, Neomec alone is not the answer you should ideally be asking the veterinary, what the situation is. You can easily overdose a dog and kill it also. You have to be little careful going around giving Neomec to all dogs. Its not a very god idea.
