A viral video shows people hanging posters in front of shops. The posters read ‘It’s our fault we have voted for the BJP’ in Hindi signed by traders and residents' associations. Those sharing the video claim that the video is from Gujarat.

A social media user shared the video and wrote, “Gujarat: Traders association in Surat put up posters against BJP.” (Translated from Hindi) (Archive)

SouthCheck found that the claim was misleading. We found that the viral video is old. It shows people in Indore protesting the government’s action in razing shops to build a Smart City.

On doing a Google reverse image search, we found a screenshot of the video shared by Punjab Kesari on July 30, 2019. The report associated with the screenshot stated that traders of Sheetalamata Bazaar protested the demolition of shops to broaden the road.

Similarly, Patrika also published a related story on July 31, 2019, stating that shops in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, hung posters against the BJP for the demolition of shops for broadening the road. The report also suggested a similar campaign took place in Gujarat after the government announced GST.

The incident was also reported by One India. In 2019, the BJP was in power in Madhya Pradesh.

Hence, we conclude that the viral video is old and is from Indore in MP, not Gujarat.
