Fact Check: Amarnath Yatra cancelled after attack on Baramulla police station? No, here’s the truth

The viral video is from 2017 when three militants were killed in an encounter with security forces. And we also found no report of a recent attack on Amarnath Yatra.

A video is widely being shared on social media in which two police vehicles are seen in the middle of a field.

The video is shared with a caption claiming that terrorists attacked various government offices across Baramulla city in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Amarnath Yatra. The video shows Indian army launching a security operation against terrorists who had launched an attack on a police station in Baramulla.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “AmarnathYatra Cancelled. Militants launched an attack on a police station in Baramulla and later opened fire on govt offices across the city, Now Indian Army to launch a security operation. CM @OmarAbdullah has proposed the cancellation of the #AmarnathYatra In Kashmir.” (How is Baramulla related to Amarnath Yatra?)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from 2017 when three militants were killed in an encounter with security forces. And we also found no report of a recent attack on Amarnath Yatra.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video is shared by Amar Ujala on December 5, 2017.

The report associated with the video stated that three militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Lower Munda area of Qazigund in Jammu and Kashmir after a gunfight broke out during a cordon-and-search operation. The operation was launched following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants. Security forces recovered arms and ammunition from the encounter site, while search operations in the area continued.

Taking a hint, we searched with a relevant keyword and found that the incident was reported by Zee News on December 5, 2017.

According to the report, the Indian Army killed three militants in an encounter in Qazigund, Jammu and Kashmir, including a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist believed to have been involved in the 2000 Amarnath pilgrimage massacre. The operation was launched after intelligence inputs, and security forces recovered weapons and ammunition from the site. The Army described the encounter as a major success against militancy in the region.

Was there a terrorist attack at Amarnath Yatra in 2026?

We further found no reports of terrorist attacks during the recent Amarnath Yatra in 2026.

According to a report published by JK Today on June 28, 2026, police in Baramulla registered an FIR after false social media posts claimed terrorists had attacked a police station, opened fire on government offices, and that the Jammu and Kashmir government planned to cancel the Amarnath Yatra. Authorities dismissed the claims as fabricated, warning of strict legal action against those creating or sharing the misinformation and urging the public to rely only on official sources.

Another website, Daily Excelsior also quoted the Jammu and Kashmir police who debunked the viral claim. The police said, “The claims are completely false, baseless and devoid of any factual basis. No such terrorist attack or firing incident has taken place anywhere in Baramulla, and the information regarding the proposed cancellation of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is also entirely false and misleading.”

“The deliberate dissemination of such fabricated content appears to be a calculated attempt to create fear, spread panic, disturb public tranquillity and undermine public confidence during the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra,” they added.

Moreover, a report published by The New Indian Express on June 2, suggested that ahead of the 2026 Amarnath Yatra, the Jammu and Kashmir administration declared both the Pahalgam and Baltal pilgrimage routes as no-fly zones from July 1 until the end of the 57-day yatra, suspending helicopter services for a second consecutive year due to security concerns. Pilgrims have been advised to travel on foot or use ponies and palkis, while security agencies will maintain round-the-clock aerial surveillance.

Thus, we neither found any reports of terrorist attacks nor reports of cancellation of Amarnath Yatra and police have debunked the alleged attack on Baramulla police station as false. Also, the video is old. Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
