Israel launched Operation Rising Lion on June 13, targeting Iran’s nuclear and military sites, allegedly killing top IRGC commanders, including Hossein Salami. Iran retaliated by sending over 100 drones, triggering interceptions and regional escalation.

In the above context, a video of missiles attacking a city is widely being shared on social media.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it is of Israel attacking Iran. A social media user shared the video with the caption that reads, “Israel has attacked Iran. It is claimed that Iran’s army chief and a top nuclear scientist have been killed in this attack. An emergency has been declared in Iran. Schools and colleges have been closed. Airspace has also been closed until further notice.” (Translated from Hindi)

SouthCheck found the claim to be misleading. We found that the video was old and showed Iran attacking Israel.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by DD India on October 2, 2024. The video is shared with a caption that reads, “Iranian missiles targeting the Nevatim airbase in the Negev Desert.”

We found that TRT World had also shared the same video on October 1, 2024. The video is shared with a caption that reads, “Iranian missiles have struck Israel’s Nevatim Airbase near Beersheva (Bir al-Sabi) after Tehran launched a salvo of rockets in retaliation for Israel’s raids in Lebanon.”

We further found that NPR News had also shared the incident on October 4, 2024. The incident suggests that about 32 Iranian missiles struck Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel on October 1, 2024. While hangars, runways and taxiways were damaged, Israel says no jets were lost and operations continue.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is old.
