A video showing a truck driver brandishing a sword and chasing a group of men in the middle of the road has gone viral on social media.
The video is shared with a caption claiming it shows a Muslim truck driver protesting with a sword after ‘Hindu vigilantes’ attacked his cow-laden truck.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Terrorist Hindus attack a truck loaded with cows. Muslim driver came out with a sword.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video shows a road rage incident in Gurugram after a bus-truck collision, not a communal confrontation over cattle transport. The driver is Sikh, not Muslim.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by India Today on July 11. The report stated that a dramatic road rage incident unfolded in Haryana’s Gurugram after a truck and a private bus were involved in a minor collision that damaged the bus’s side mirror.
According to the report, an argument broke out after the collision, following which the bus driver, conductor and several others allegedly attacked the truck driver with sticks, rods and other objects. The attackers are also accused of damaging the truck’s windows.
Videos recorded by bystanders show the Sikh driver emerging from his vehicle and confronting the group. Witnesses claimed that he initially took out his kirpan (a ceremonial knife) and later wielded a sword after the confrontation escalated. The footage shows the driver raising the Sikh religious slogan ‘Bole So Nihal’ before chasing away several men who had allegedly surrounded him.
The incident was also reported by Aaj Tak on June 11.
According to the report, angered by the damage to the bus’s windshield, the bus driver, conductor, and several of their associates allegedly attacked the Sikh driver sitting inside the canter vehicle. They reportedly struck the canter with sticks and iron rods and smashed its windows. A large crowd gathered at the scene during the incident.
The incident was also reported by ETV Bharat on June 11.
According to the report, the incident took place near Jhajjar Gate in the Farrukhnagar area of Gurugram. Police reached the spot and intervened. According to local reports, both sides were counselled, and the matter was resolved through a mutual settlement, with no major legal action reported.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video has no communal angle to it.
