Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon, a video of a public funeral procession has gone viral. In the video, while the procession is going on, the corpse allegedly explodes resulting in widespread chaos.
Those sharing the video insinuate that the video is from Lebanon showing a trap set by Israel.
An X user shared the video with a caption, “After killing the terrorist, Israel returned his body, whose funeral was attended by hundreds of terrorists. The dead body was filled with gunpowder, due to which many more terrorists were killed in the blast.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The viral video is from Damascus, Syria, and it shows an alleged government-organised car bombing during the funeral of an anti-government Syrian.
On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the same video published by EuroNews on Dailymotion 12 years ago. The video was shared with a description that reads, “Unverified amateur footage purports to show a mortar bomb exploding during a funeral procession in Damascus. The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims 30 people lost their lives as they mourned the death of a man who died in the capital just a day earlier.”
NBC News also shared the same video on July 12, 2012. The caption associated with the video suggested that the video showed an explosion during a funeral procession in Syria that killed dozens of people.
The video was also uploaded by ABC News.
Using the information gathered, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the incident was also reported by CNN on July 1, 2012. According to the report, a funeral procession of a man wrapped in a Syrian revolutionary flag and had allegedly been killed by government forces was being taken out when an explosion happened. Activists suggested that it was a government-organised car bombing in which 85 people were killed and more than 300 people were wounded, most of them in critical condition.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral incident is old and unrelated to the Israel-Lebanon conflict.
