Fact Check: Rahul Gandhi insults Lord Ram? No, here is the truth

The claim is false. In the viral video, Rahul Gandhi was remarking on the Central government’s VB–G RAM G scheme.

A video of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has gone viral on social media with the claim that he was insulting Lord Ram by distorting his name.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that Rahul Gandhi was insulting Lord Ram.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Rahul Gandhi once again tried to insult Lord Ram, but God is beyond honour and insult. His only aim is to repeatedly hurt the feelings of us Hindus.” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. In the video, Rahul Gandhi was remarking on the Central government’s Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB–G RAM G) scheme.

In the video, Rahul Gandhi could be heard saying, “I don’t know what it is, Gram Ji. What is the name of the new law? I don’t even know its name… Yes, Gram Ji, what is it… Gram Ji, I don’t know what…”) (Translated from Hindi)

Thus, taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the entire video was shared by the YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress on January 22.

In the video, at around 39:50 minutes, we can see Rahul Gandhi make the same remark in the viral video. The title of the video reads, ‘LIVE: Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and LoP Shri Rahul Gandhi address the National MGNREGA Workers' Convention | New Delhi.’

We found that the incident was also reported by NDTV on January 22.

According to the report, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, while criticising the new G-RAM-G jobs scheme that replaced MNREGA, admitted he didn’t know its name, saying, “I don’t know what G-RAM-G is!” The BJP seized on his comment, calling him ‘anti-Hindu’ for mispronouncing the law and accusing Congress of disrespecting Hindu sentiments. Gandhi urged unity against the new job law.

The incident was also reported by Dainik Jagran

Hence, we can ascertain that Rahul was making remarks against the law and not Lord Ram.

What is VB-G RAM G scheme?

The Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 — commonly called VB-G RAM G — is India’s new rural employment law replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). It raises the statutory guarantee of work from 100 to 125 days per rural household per year and is part of the government’s broader Viksit Bharat @2047 vision to link job creation with planned rural development and infrastructure building.

Unlike the older demand-driven scheme, VB-G RAM G shifts to normative budget allocations and a shared 60:40 funding model between the Centre and states (90:10 for some regions), which means states must finance work beyond the allocation. The new framework prioritises four key sectors: water security, core rural infrastructure, livelihood-related infrastructure, and climate mitigation works. Works are planned through Viksit Gram Panchayat Plans and integrated into a national rural infrastructure stack, aiming for durable assets and better resource planning. Wages must be paid weekly, with penalties for delays, and unemployment allowance remains mandatory if work isn’t provided.

Supporters say this modernises rural employment efforts; critics argue it weakens the rights-based approach and increases state burdens.
