Fact Check: Rally in UK in support of Bondi Beach attackers? Here is the truth.

The claim is false. The viral video is old and shows a pro-Palestine protest.

Yusha Rahman

On December 14, the father-son attackers at Sydney’s Bondi Beach Hanukkah terror attack have been identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. They opened fire on a Jewish celebration, killing 16 people and injuring many. Sajid was shot dead by police; Naveed survived, is hospitalised under guard, and faces extensive terrorism and murder charges. Authorities say the act was inspired by Islamic State-linked extremist ideology, with ISIS flags and improvised devices found near the scene.

In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which people are protesting on the street. The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows people in the United Kingdom expressing their support for the terrorists who conducted the Sydney attack.

social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “After the terrorist attack in Sydney, people protesting in Manchester in support of Palestine. Is this community more dangerous than monsters? What should be done with this community for world peace?” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is old and shows a pro-Palestine protest.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an X account on June 9. The caption suggests that the viral video is from Britain.

Since the viral video is old, we can ascertain that the post has no link with the recent attack in Australia.

We further enlarged a screenshot of the viral image and saw text that read, ‘Bee Network app.’ A Google search for the app showed that it is for transport in Greater Manchester.

Thus, it suggests that the viral video is from Manchester.

Taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found a video shared by a Facebook page on June 12.

The caption read, “Chants of Gaza echoed through Manchester as hundreds took over Piccadilly Station, waving Palestinian flags in a powerful stand against genocide and in support of Gaza’s resilience.”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is old and unrelated to the Sydney attack.
