A video of smoke rising from a forest is being widely shared with the claim that it shows a terror attack on the Indian Army’s 36th Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir.

An X user shared the video with the caption, “Kashmiri freedom fighters have launched a devastating attack on the Indian Army’s 36th Infantry Brigade camp in Sunjwan, Jammu, IIOJK. Reports indicate the operation resulted in the deaths of 12 Indian soldiers and significant destruction within the camp. (sic)”

SouthCheck found that the claim was false.

On doing a Google reverse image search with one of the video’s screenshots, we found the same video was uploaded on YouTube on January 18, 2024. The description associated with the video suggested that the video shows a militant attack on a security forces vehicle in the Moreh area of Manipur. Two soldiers were killed in the attack and one woman from the Kuki community was killed.

The same video was also shared by Dainik Bhaskar. The report suggested that the militants bombed the security forces in Manipur.

We further found an India Today article published on September 2, 2024, that stated that a security personnel was killed near the Sunjawan military camp in Jammu and Kashmir. While initially, the Army claimed that it was a terrorist attack, later they said that the incident was not a terrorist attack and the cause of the death was still under investigation.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is old and has no relation to the recent attack in J&K.
