Fact Check: Clipped video of Mallikarjun Kharge shared with misleading claims

An edited video of Mallikarjuna Kharge has gone viral with a false claim.

A video of Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge is widely shared on social media, in which he is heard saying, "Always, the Congress party is dividing the nation in the name of caste.”

The video is shared with a caption claiming that Kharge is speaking against his party.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “ये किसकी तरफ है , और इसने किसका नमक खाया है.” (English translation, “Whose side is he on, and whose salt has he eaten.”)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found the claim to be false. The viral video is edited.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found a similar video was uploaded by a YouTube channel. The caption suggested that the speech was from Bihar.


Taking a hint, we searched with the appropriate keywords and found the full version of the video was uploaded by the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress. The video was shared on February 15, 2024. 

In the full-length video, Kharge is talking about why the caste base census was done by Congress. 

At around 13:18 timestamp, we can hear him say, “Modi accuses the Congress party of dividing the nation based on caste. Where are we dividing the nation? We are just trying to provide justice to people.”

The same video was also uploaded by Indian Express on February 15, 2024, with a caption claiming that the incident was of 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' of Congress held at Aurangabad, Bihar.

Hence, we can ascertain that a clipped video of Kharge is shared with a misleading claim.
