On September 8, Nepal’s ‘Gen Z’ protests erupted after the government banned 26 major social-media platforms, angering young people already frustrated with corruption, inequality and unfulfilled promises. The movement forced the social-media ban to be lifted, led to resignations, and exposed deep distrust of the political elite.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seen arriving in a black convoy with people around him clicking pictures and showering flowers.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that the video shows PM Modi visiting Nepal after the protest and the people of Nepal welcoming him.
A social media user shared the video, which has a text on it: “Modi’s entry in Pokhra, Nepal, Hindu Rashtra.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Bihar.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video shared by an Instagram account on May 30. The caption associated with the video suggested that the video is from Patna, where PM Modi visited for the inauguration of the airport.
Upon further analysis of the video, we saw a gate with ‘No. 2 Bailey Road’ written over it on a board.
Taking a hint, we searched for Bailey Road on Google Maps and found that it was the gate of Kendriya Vidyalaya school in Patna, Bailey Road. This proves that the video was shot in Patna.
We also found news reports about PM Modi’s trip to Patna.
The Economic Times on May 30 stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a Rs 1,200-crore new terminal at Patna’s Jayprakash Narayan International Airport, laid the foundation for a Rs 1,410-crore civil enclave in Bihta and led a roadshow through Patna, reaffirming infrastructure and connectivity focus in Bihar.
Moreover, we found no reports on PM Modi’s visit to Pokhara, Nepal, after the recent protests and change of government.
However, we found that PM Modi has had a telephonic conversation with the interim PM of Nepal, Sushila Karki, during which he extended National Day greetings and expressed hope that this would contribute to fostering peace and stability between the two countries.
An excerpt from the conversation was also shared by PM Modi on his X account on September 18.
Hence, we can conclude that the viral claim is false.
