A video is being widely shared on social media in which a woman is seen being brutally assaulted by a man while others are watching. The man is seen holding the hair of the woman and throwing her on the floor.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that the woman shown in the video is a Muslim and the video is from India.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “India has become hell for Muslim women; this video shows how a Muslim woman is being brutally assaulted in India.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from Krasnodar, Russia, where a girl was assaulted by her relatives when she tried to run away to marry her lover.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the incident was also reported by ABP Live on November 19, 2021.
According to the report, a man allegedly assaulted his sister after finding her with her boyfriend at a restaurant. The man slapped and punched her, dragged her by her hair and kicked her repeatedly. The video sparked outrage on social media, with users criticising the violence and bystanders for recording instead of intervening.
We further found that the screenshot of the video was shared by a Russian website, Life.Ru, on July 5, 2021. According to the report, the incident took place in Krasnodar, Russia, in July 2021, when a Muslim woman was assaulted by her relatives after she tried to elope with her boyfriend.
The incident was also reported by another Russian website, Bloknot-Krasnodar, on July 14, 2021. According to the report, the video shows a young Crimean Roman woman from Krasnodar being assaulted by relatives after she allegedly tried to flee to Ukraine to marry a man she met online.
According to reports, relatives caught her in Belgorod and brought her home, accusing her of stealing family money. In the footage, she denies the allegation while pleading with her relatives to stop beating her.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is not from India and has no communal angle involved in it.
