Saraswati Puja was celebrated by people of the Hindu community on February 2. It is a festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of wisdom, learning and arts.

In the above backdrop, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a girl can be seen dancing to a song on stage while a crowd of men cheer her on. Those sharing the video claim it shows the video was shot during a Saraswati Puja function in a Bihar college.

A social media user shared the video and wrote, “Bihar’s students strengthening the education system of Bihar.” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is misleading. Although the video was shot during Saraswati puja, the footage is from Nepal.

On closely observing the video, we found that the banner in the background reads, ‘Nepal Engineering College.’ Other texts read, "Heartfelt wishes for Saraswati Puja." The event was organised by Nepal Terai Student Society.

Using the hint, we searched for Nepal Engineering College and found that it was located in Changunarayan, Nepal.

We further found the same video on an Instagram page, The Guwahati Times, on February 11, 2025. The caption suggested that the video was of an engineering college in Nepal. The caption reads, “A video from Nepal Engineering College has gone viral, showing a woman student dancing in an inappropriate manner during Saraswati Puja. Other students were seen cheering and enjoying the act. The video has sparked outrage, with many calling it disrespectful to the religious occasion and criticising the student’s behaviour.”

We further found that the incident was also reported by TV9 Kannada on February 11, 2025. The report suggested that the video of the woman performing an obscene dance during Saraswati Puja Celebration was from Nepal Engineering College, Nepal.

Therefore, we conclude that the viral claim is misleading.
