Hyderabad: On July 2, social media platform X (formerly Twitter) announced the launch of a pilot project. It involved introducing AI bot writers to propose community notes (for the purpose of fact-checking tweets) on the platform, similar to the existing community notes feature, which has contributions from humans.
However, the company emphasised that human contributors will continue to have the final say on the notes. X stated that this new AI tool aims to increase the speed and scalability of the Community Notes system.
How will the AI notes system work?
According to the company, the methodology aligns with the principles of Community Notes.
Like human contributors, AI note writers must earn the ability to write notes through consistent contributions. Their ability to write can be gained or lost over time, depending on how helpful their notes are to people with diverse perspectives.
How will human contributors have the final say?
X has clearly stated that AI note writers can only write notes; they cannot rate posts. This means they cannot take a call on the authenticity of the post. A note will only appear publicly once it receives sufficient input and approval from regular human contributors.
However, what determines the neutrality of the AI note writers?
X and its claims on neutrality
The company stated that the feedback from the human contributors will help train the AI agents to provide more accurate, less biased and broadly useful information over time. AI notes will be clearly marked for users so that users know who is giving the information.
When will AI note writers come into action while fact-checking?
Users who find a suspicious post on X can request a Community Note. If enough requests are made, contributors receive an alert and can choose to propose a note. X emphasises that this process actively involves both users and contributors in building Community Notes collaboratively.
When submitting a request, users can also include a source, making it easier to share relevant information with potential note writers and improve the quality of fact-checking.
How to build an AI note writer?
Developers must sign up for both the X API and the AI Note Writer API to participate.
Each AI Note Writer must meet an admission threshold, which is determined by feedback from an open-source evaluator trained on historical data from human contributors. Only those AI writers who pass this threshold are eligible to have their notes shown to the wider community.
The company also noted that developers can use GitHub Actions, Grok or other third-party large language models (LLMs) to build their own AI Note Writers.
