The viral video
In the above context, a CCTV video showing police personnel breaking the windows of a parked car has gone viral on social media. In the video, a black car is seen standing in the middle of the road when some police personnel are seen crossing it. While crossing, police personnel hit the car with a baton.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows Delhi Police vandalising vehicles during the ongoing Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests at Jantar Mantar. The footage has been shared widely with captions alleging police brutality against protesters.
The video is widely being shared with a caption that reads, “Conspiracy to trap students exposed! The camera has revealed the system’s true face! Watch this video carefully. Uniformed personnel are openly smashing car windows with batons themselves.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video shows police personnel breaking car windows during a political clash in Madhya Pradesh, following the BJP’s denial of a bypoll ticket to Narottam Mishra.
On searching with appropriate keywords, we found that Delhi police had responded to one of the X posts and refuted the viral claim. On July 21, 2026, the police took to X and wrote, “This is an old video and not from Delhi. It has been shared out of context to mislead the public. Delhi Police cautions citizens against circulating unverified information or indulging in rumour-mongering.”
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an Instagram page and YouTube channel of ABP_Live on July 13. The video is shared with a caption which, when translated into English, reads, “Datia - During the demonstration of BJP workers, on one hand the DM and SP were accusing the BJP workers of vandalism, but today a CCTV video is going viral in which police personnel can be seen breaking the glass of the vehicle.”
The video was also shared by Amar Ujala on July 13.
According to the report associated with the video, a CCTV video from Datia has intensified the political row over the recent Assembly by-election violence. The footage allegedly shows police personnel vandalising parked private vehicles on the night protests erupted after former minister Narottam Mishra was denied a BJP ticket. Authorities have said the viral video is being investigated and action will be taken if any misconduct by police is confirmed.
Using this information, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the incident was reported by The Hindu too on July 11.
According to the report, violence erupted in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia after the BJP denied former minister Narottam Mishra a ticket for the July 30 Assembly byelection, nominating Ashutosh Tiwari instead. Around 3,000 of Mishra’s supporters blocked NH-44 for nearly 12 hours and clashed with police, injuring several officers. Police used tear gas, made arrests, and later restored order.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
