A dramatic video showing a massive fire and explosions at a commercial building has gone viral on social media. The video shows intense flames and thick black smoke rising from what appears to be a market or industrial area.
The video is shared with a caption claiming that it shows an Iranian attack on Camp Doha in Kuwait that destroyed a US ammunition depot.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Iran launched a massive pre-dawn attack on Camp Doha, west of Kuwait, destroying an American ammunition depot.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video shows a fire incident at a Malaysian market.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by a YouTube channel, The Malaysian Post, on July 24, with a caption that reads, “A major fire broke out tonight at the Selangor Wholesale Market in Seri Kembangan, prompting a swift response from emergency services. Firefighters and relevant authorities are working to bring the fire under control and ensure the safety of the public, while an investigation into the cause of the incident is expected to be carried out once the situation is under control. The public is advised to avoid the area to allow for emergency operations.”
We found that the screenshot of the viral video was also shared by Asia One, an Asia-based website, on July 24.
The report associated with the video suggests that a massive fire broke out at the Selangor Wholesale Market in Seri Kembangan, Malaysia, on the night of July 23, triggering multiple explosions after about 2,000 methane gas cylinders caught fire. Firefighters battled the blaze until early July 24 but faced difficulties as five nearby hydrants were unusable, forcing them to rely on fire engines and water tankers. No casualties were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
Taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the incident was also reported by Malaymail, a Malaysian website, on July 24.
According to the report, a major fire near the Selangor Wholesale Market in Seri Kembangan was complicated by exploding methane canisters and five unusable private hydrants. Firefighters relied on water tankers to contain the blaze, which started around 10:50 pm. No casualties were reported, and the main market complex was saved
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
Has Iran attacked Camp Doha in Kuwait?
According to a report published by Al Jazeera on July 12, Iran launched missile and drone attacks against Qatar, including targets linked to the Al Udeid Air Base and areas around Doha, as part of its retaliation against US military operations. Most incoming projectiles were intercepted by Qatari air defences.
