A video is being widely shared on social media in which a police officer is seen putting a man into a van with grills while people attempt to hit the man being escorted.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows a sweet vendor being assaulted for mixing urine into sweets without permission in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. The captions suggested that the man is a Muslim.
A social media user shared the video and wrote, “In Kathua, Jammu, two Muslims were seen spraying urine on sweets and serving them to customers. People who saw this beat them up and handed them over to the police.” (Translated from Kannada)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video shows police arresting a print shop owner for an obscene video inside the press that also prints boxes for religious purposes.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video on an Instagram page, Kathuastarnews, shared on August 16.
The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Accused of obscene activity in Bilawar’s Fintar Chowk, people throw printing press items out.” We found Phinter Chowk is a location in Bilawar, Jammu and Kashmir.
The incident was also mentioned by a Facebook page called Billawar Timeline on August 16. The page shared a video of people protesting outside a shop and burning sweet boxes. We identified that the video is related to the same incident due to the same red banner on a building in the background of both videos.
The incident was also reported by Amar Ujala on August 17.
According to the report, in Kathua’s Fintar Chowk, locals accused a printing press of obscene acts. The press supposedly makes sweet boxes used to pack temple prasad. They pulled out the press materials, torched them and handed over the accused, including the owner and two workers, to police.
The incident was also reported by the Daily Excelsior on August 17.
According to the report, residents of Billawar staged a massive protest after a viral obscene video was allegedly filmed inside Super Tech Offset Printing Press. They ransacked the shop, torched printed material and manhandled the owner, demanding strict action.
We independently verify the religious identity of the printshop owner. However, the Daily Excelsior report, quoting the SHO of Billawar, stated that the obscene video was made by a mentally disturbed person.
We further tried contacting the police and the copy will be updated after receiving further details. However, we can right now ascertain that the viral claim is false.
