A video of a massive crowd on a beach road has gone with the claim that it shows the attendance for the Mumbai Chalo Rally – a protest called by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) seeking action against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane for his alleged hate speeches.
A social media user shared the video and wrote, “Crowd of people loving the Prophet on the streets of Mumbai.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The video showed Mumbai residents celebrating India’s T20 World Cup win in 2024.
On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded to YouTube on July 6, 2024. The caption stated that it showed the victory parade held on Mumbai’s Marine Drive after India won the T20 World Cup.
An X handle uploaded the video stating that the viral video shows people cheering for the Indian cricket team after they won the T20 World Cup.
A YouTube channel called Channel 5 Tamil also uploaded the same video on July 9, 2024, with the title, ‘ICC T20 World Cup Champions Team India Road Show.’
We found the screenshot from a similar video published by a website suggesting that the image shows people coming together on Marine Drive in Mumbai to celebrate the T20 World Cup 2024 winners with a much-anticipated victory parade, followed by a felicitation ceremony.
The event was also reported by DNA News India on their YouTube channel.
The incident was also reported by ESPN. According to the report, Marine Drive in Mumbai was packed with the fans of the Indian cricket team which has returned from winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados. The crowd was waiting to welcome the players, who were in an open-top bus on the way to the Wankhede Stadium.
We found another report by Mirror Now which showed a video similar to the viral video. We compared both videos and found them to be of the same location. One can see the sea view and similar buildings in the background. We can also see the similar queue of vehicles on the road too.
Hence, we confirm that the video doesn’t show people attending AIMIM’s call for a rally against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane in Mumbai.
