Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed the women-only ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ event in Pune on August 22, focusing on education, women’s safety, equality, competitive exams and career opportunities.
He criticised patriarchal attitudes and questioned gender-based double standards, while urging young women to assert their independence and challenge discriminatory social norms.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a massive crowd is seen cheering and shouting while lights are flashing on them.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows Rahul Gandhi’s rally that was held in Pune.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “There is no solution to this storm. This is the era of people’s leader Rahul Gandhi.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video shows a crowd during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Fest in Mexico City.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an Instagram page of a sports journalist on July 6.
The video was shared with a caption that reads, “This is how the fan fest of Mexico City reacted after the goal of Quiñones.”
Analysis of the video
At the beginning of the video, we can see a soccer match playing on the television in a studio room, and then the camera moves towards the crowd outside the balcony. The camera captures the crowd outside, shouting, cheering and celebrating.
In both videos, we can see Mexico 26 written and the same tent in black and green. Also, in the original video, we can see that the stage has ‘FIFA’ written on it.
The video predates the Rahul Gandhi rally. The text in the video suggests that the viral video is of FIFA.
Using this information, we searched with relevant keywords and found another video of the event, shared by a YouTube channel on June 12. The caption reads, “Thousands of football fans erupted in celebration at Mexico City’s iconic Zócalo Square after Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.”
In both videos, we can see the same building in the background along with the makeshift tents, suggesting that the videos are of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and from Mexico.
Moreover, we also did a Google Street View and found them to be the same; we found the same flagpole with Mexico’s national flag in the central square of the Zocalo. This confirmed that the viral video is from Mexico and not Pune.
A report published by Fox News on July 2 stated that Mexico fans celebrated their team’s 2-0 World Cup victory over Ecuador. This celebration reportedly generated enough ground movement to trigger local seismic monitoring equipment. The artificial seismic signal was detected after Julián Quiñones scored in the 22nd minute, followed by another surge after Raúl Jiménez’s goal. The phenomenon was caused by thousands of fans jumping and celebrating, not a genuine earthquake.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
