A video has gone viral on social media showing a massive display of fireworks. Those sharing the video claim that it shows Diwali celebrations in Nagaland.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Deepawali celebrations at Dimapur stadium in #Nagaland. #Deepavali2024.” (Archive)
SouthCheck found that the claim was false. The viral video shows a fire show during a football match in South America.
Through a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded on YouTube on October 30, 2024. The caption reads, “River Plate vs Atlético Mineiro, the greatest football stadium entrance ever.” This hinted that the video was not from India.
River Plate, also known as Club Atlético River Plate, is an Argentine professional sports club based in the Belgrano neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Similarly, Atlético Mineiro, also known as Clube Atlético Mineiro, is a professional football club of Belo Horizonte, the capital city of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
The caption suggested that the video shows a fireworks show by the River Plate fans before the Copa Libertadores final football match against Atlético Mineiro.
Copa Libertadores is an annual continental club football competition which is the highest level of competition in South American club football. The Facebook page of Daily Mail Sport also shared the video on October 30, 2024. It was shared with a caption that reads, “Scenes at River Plate vs. Atletico Minerio.”
In a report by Bein Sports published on October 31, 2024, it was stated that the massive fireworks display at the River Plate’s stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, shut down the match against Atlético Mineiro during the Copa Libertadores final.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is from South America, not Nagaland.
