Hyderabad: Meta has introduced Muse Image, its first in-house AI image generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. The tool is now available through Meta AI and brings advanced image editing and generation capabilities across the company’s platforms.
Alongside new creative features, the launch has also drawn attention from privacy advocates because the model can use publicly available Instagram photos as visual references unless users choose to opt out.
What is Muse Image?
Muse Image is Meta’s latest AI image generation model that allows users to create or edit images using natural language prompts.
Users can generate entirely new images, edit existing photos, combine multiple images into a single composition, remove unwanted objects, redesign rooms, create infographics with readable text or generate personalised graphics.
The model is integrated with Meta AI and is available through the Meta AI app, web interface, Instagram Stories in the US and WhatsApp in select countries. Meta says it will soon expand to Facebook, Messenger and its advertising platform through Advantage+ Creative.
How does Muse Image work?
According to Meta, Muse Image works alongside its reasoning model, Muse Spark, before generating an image.
Instead of directly producing an output from a prompt, the system first analyses the request, plans the layout, gathers relevant context where needed and combines multiple visual references to produce the final image.
Users can describe requests in conversational language, upload their own photos, blend several images together or make edits by drawing directly on an image using a built-in markup tool.
Meta has also introduced preset prompts that let users quickly generate images such as restored family photographs, different hairstyles, claymation versions or retro-style game characters.
Instagram integration
One of the most notable additions is Muse Image’s integration with Instagram.
Users can include the @username of a public Instagram account while generating an image. Meta AI can then use publicly available images from that account as visual references for the generated content.
Meta says this feature can be used for collaborative designs, invitations, personalised graphics and other creative projects.
The company also allows users to redesign rooms using real products from the web or Facebook Marketplace and generate personalised visuals using multiple reference images.
Privacy concerns
The Instagram integration has triggered criticism from privacy groups and digital rights advocates.
Critics argue that allowing public Instagram photos to be used in AI-generated images without notifying account owners could create privacy risks and increase the possibility of misuse.
How to opt out of feature?
Meta says public Instagram accounts are included by default, but users can disable the feature through Instagram’s settings.
To opt out, users with public accounts can open Instagram Settings → Sharing and Reuse and turn off the option that allows people to reuse their content on Instagram and with Meta AI features.
Meta says this setting is available only for public accounts. Private accounts are not included because their content cannot be reused through this feature.
The company also says account owners are not notified when someone uses their public content as a visual reference in AI-generated images.
Editing and creative features
Muse Image includes several editing tools aimed at making image generation more interactive.
Users can:
- Generate images from simple text prompts.
- Edit existing photographs by removing or replacing objects.
- Combine multiple photos into a single composition.
- Draw, circle or sketch directly on images to specify edits.
- Create infographics with readable text.
- Generate QR codes and other visual designs.
- Redesign rooms using products from the web or Facebook Marketplace.
Availability
Meta says the AI remembers previous prompts during a conversation, allowing users to continue refining an image without starting over.
Muse Image is currently available for free through Meta AI for everyday use, while higher usage limits are included with Meta's subscription plans.
The company says the feature is rolling out gradually and will expand to more countries and Meta platforms in the coming months. Meta is also developing Muse Video, a video generation model that will extend the same capabilities to AI-generated videos.
Understanding the debate
Muse Image represents Meta’s latest push to make AI image generation part of its social platforms rather than a standalone creative tool.
While its ability to understand complex prompts, combine multiple references and edit images directly may improve creative workflows, its integration with public Instagram content has also renewed discussions around privacy, consent and the use of publicly shared images in generative AI systems.
As AI-generated media becomes increasingly common, the balance between creative innovation and user privacy is likely to remain a key area of discussion.
