After Republic Day, a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar was found vandalised in Amritsar, resulting in widespread outrage. The police said a youth caused the damage by climbing the ladder used by politicians to garland the statue and left it there.
In the above backdrop, a video has gone viral in which people are assaulting a person outside a court. Those sharing the video claim the person being assaulted is the person responsible for the vandalism.
A social media user shared the video with the caption, “Manuwadi who broke Baba Saheb’s statue in Amritsar was beaten up during court appearance…” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from Raipur and not Amritsar, and it shows lawyers thrashing a convict.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel on January 23, 2025. The video was shared with a caption suggesting that a convict attacked a lawyer, after which the lawyers thrashed him.Another hyperlocal news channel, uploaded the same video on January 19, 2025, mentioning that the viral incident was from Raipur, Chhattisgarh. As Ambedkar’s statue was vandalised on January 26, 2025, we can ascertain that the viral video is old.
Further, we searched with the relevant keywords and found the same video uploaded by Amar Ujala on January 19, 2025. According to the report, the accused Ajay Singh attacked senior lawyer Durgesh Sharma, after which the lawyers thrashed the accused Ajay Singh while police tried to save him from being assaulted. An FIR was filed against the lawyers.
Therefore, we can conclude that the viral claim is false.
