A video is being widely shared on social media in which a group of people are seen thrashing others while police try to restrain them.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that some people in Bihar are beating BJP supporters.
A social media user shared the video with a caption which reads, “We know how to run not only in Edappal but also in Bihar.”
The comment was made based on an incident that happened in 2019.
In early January 2019, Kerala saw a hartal organised by the Sabarimala Karma Samithi, alongside BJP-backed groups, against the Supreme Court verdict lifting the ban on women of menstruating age entering Sabarimala. During a bike rally at Edappal Junction in Malappuram, the participants were attacked by left-wing supporters, leading to them fleeing in panic and abandoning their bikes. Till now, ‘Edappal Ottam’ is a term used to troll BJP workers in Kerala.
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is old and from Telangana.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by ETV Telangana on February 10, 2022.
The video was shared with a caption suggesting that a clash occurred between supporters of the BJP and TRS (now BRS) in Jangaon. The BJP and TRS workers attacked each other with sticks at Narmetta intersection, leaving several injured. Police stopped BJP leaders Eatala Rajender and Raja Singh, who were on their way to visit the party workers injured in the clash. BJP leaders have accused the TRS government of making a mockery of democracy in the State.
The same video was also shared by NTV Telugu on February 9, 2022. The video suggested that supporters of TRS and BJP faced off during a rally in Jangaon.
The Hindu also reported the incident on February 9, 2022.
According to the report, in Jangaon district, Telangana, workers from BJP and TRS clashed during Bandi Sanjay’s padyatra—pelting stones and swinging sticks. Multiple activists from both sides were injured before police stepped in to control the situation.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
