On June 12, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787‑8 departing Ahmedabad for London, crashed seconds after take-off into a BJ Medical College hostel in Meghani Nagar. The disaster killed over 270 onboard and on the ground, with just one British-Indian survivor.
In the above context, an image of a flight crash is widely being shared on social media. The image is shared with a caption suggesting that the video is related to the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad.
A social media user shared the image with a caption that reads, “The news of a passenger plane crashing near the airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat is extremely painful and disturbing. Relief and rescue operations are going on at the site on a war footing. I pray to God for the well-being, health and safety of all the passengers.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral image is old and is from Kerala.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same image is shared by Dainik Bhaskar, five years ago. The image was shared with a story suggesting that on August 7, 2020, Air India Express Flight IX‑1344, returning from Dubai, skidded off Kozhikode’s table-top runway amid heavy rain. It plunged down a slope and broke apart, killing 21 and injuring over 100.
The incident was also reported by The Better India on August 8, 2020. The report suggested that on August 7, 2020, Air India Express Flight IX‑1344 from Dubai skidded off Kozhikode’s tabletop runway in heavy rain, plunged into a 30 ft slope, and split in two. Local residents braved Covid‑19 risks to rescue survivors, organise blood donations and transport the injured—saving dozens.
The incident was also reported by India TV.
Therefore, we can ascertain that the viral image is old.
