Kavin Selva Ganesh, a 27-year-old Dalit IT professional, was hacked to death on July 27 in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. He was allegedly killed by his girlfriend’s brother in a caste-based killing. The case, now with CB-CID, sparked nationwide outrage.
About the incident, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a man is seen assaulting another in the middle of the road. Those sharing the video claim it shows Kavin girlfriend’s brother killing him.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “#Kavin Murder The scene of the crime! #JusticeForKavin.” (Translated from Tamil)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Andhra Pradesh and unrelated to Kavin’s death.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was also shared by the NDTV YouTube channel on July 18, 2024.
According to the description, the video showed a member of former Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party’s youth wing being hacked to death in the middle of the road in AP’s Palnadu district.
We also found a report published by The Indian Express on July 18, 2024.
The report had a screenshot of the video and it stated that a 27-year-old YSRCP youth leader, Sheikh Rashid, was brutally hacked for nearly five minutes on a busy road in Vinukonda, Palnadu, Andhra Pradesh.
The incident was also reported by The Hindu with the same details.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
