A video showing two men attacking a pedestrian on a street has gone viral on social media. In the video, one of the attackers, wearing a mask, is seen holding what appears to be a weapon.

The video is shared with a caption alleging that it shows a Muslim man being harassed in the streets of India while ‘human rights organisations remain silent’.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Muslims are being killed openly in India while walking on the streets—this is the real face of Modi. Human rights organisations remain silent on this.”

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is of a robbery in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is not from India.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by a Bangladeshi Instagram page, amarbanglaremati2, on September 14.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that on September 7, two teenagers armed with a large machete robbed a man of his phone and cash in broad daylight in Mohammadpur’s Nabinagar Housing area.

The victim filed a complaint at Mohammadpur Police Station but alleged having to pay extra to get it formally typed. CCTV footage, shared by a deputy secretary, in front of whose house the incident occurred, showed a similar nearby robbery.

Residents report multiple subsequent muggings at the same spot, with one involving a woman, prompting fears over rising crime and inadequate police response.

The Facebook pages of Bangladeshi news websites, including Radio Padma News and Uttorbangla, also published the same video on September 15. The accompanying captions identified the location as Mohammadpur Nabinagar Housing Residency in Dhaka.

Moreover, the official YouTube channel of Sarabangla.net, a Bangladesh-based multimedia news platform, also shared the same video on September 12. The caption reads, “Public robbery on Nabinagar Road No. 14, Mohammadpur.”

Therefore, based on the evidence, we can ascertain that the viral video is from Bangladesh and not India.
