A video is being widely shared on social media in which a large crowd is seen wearing saffron t-shirts and marching on a road.
The video is shared with a caption that the video is from Dhaka. It further suggests that the video is of Bangladeshi Hindus protesting on the road against communal attacks after Sheikh Hasina resigned as the prime minister of Bangladesh on August 5, 2024.
A social media user shared the video with the caption, “Saffron flood on the streets of Dhaka. Hindus of Bangladesh have taken to the streets to protest against the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim was false. We found that the video is old and shows a student gathering organised by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at the historic Sohrawardi Park.
On doing a Google reverse image search, we found the screenshot of the viral video shared by an Instagram user on September 2, 2023.
The caption stated that it shows a student gathering organised by the Bangladesh Chhatra League at the Suhrawardy Udyan in which Sheikh Hasina was the chief guest.
A similar video of the incident was also uploaded by Channel 24 on September 1, 2023. The video was titled ‘“Vow to resist BNP in Chhatra League rally” Awami League Somabesh BSL | Channel 24’.
The caption associated with the video stated that BCL leaders and activists from different parts of the country participated in the student gathering. The caption further read, “Chhatra League promised to support Awami League to form the government again through ballot revolution by declaring ‘Once Again Sheikh Hasina’.”
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral video is old and unrelated to reports of communal violence in Bangladesh.
