Fact Check: Old video of Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia criticising Bajrang Dal goes viral

Yusha Rahman

A video allegedly showing BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia speaking against Bajrang Dal, a Hindu nationalist group, has gone viral.

In the 1:26 seconds video clip Jyotiraditya Scindia can be seen making multiple allegations such as claiming that Bajrang Dal was ‘masterminding a spy network’, with one of the members called Balram Singh funnelling foreign money into India ‘through bank accounts established by ISI agents.’

An X user shared the video and wrote, “Looks like Scindiaji’s days in BJP are over.”

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim was misleading. The viral video clip is 7 years old when Scindia was a Congress leader.

On searching with appropriate keywords, we found an extended version of the video clip uploaded on the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress on February 17, 2017. The title read: ‘AICC Press Briefing by Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia at Congress HQ’.

At the 8:39-minute mark, one can see Scindia making the statement in the viral video clip.

Scindia hails from the royal family of Gwalior. We further found that Scindia resigned from Congress on March 10, 2020, after internal party strife in Madhya Pradesh. Jyotiraditya Scindia then joined the BJP on March 11, 2020. He won in the MP Parliamentary elections in Guna seat on a BJP ticket and retained his berth as the Union Minister of Civil Aviation.

Hence, we conclude that the viral video is old.
