A video showing two men in blue clothes smashing several idols with hammers inside a room has gone viral.

The video is shared with a caption claiming it depicts people in Nepal breaking idols, renouncing polytheism and converting to Islam following the catastrophic floods that struck the country on August 26.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “In Nepal, after the flood, idols are being broken. People are repenting from polytheism and entering Islam.”

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from South Korea in March 2024. It shows a Taehwadang shaman, who had practised shamanism for 20 years, destroying his shamanic temple after converting to Christianity.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by a YouTube channel on August 25. The caption reads, “20 Years Practicing Korean Shaman Destroys All His Idols After Finding Christ.”

We further found that the same video was shared by a YouTube channel on March 20, 2024, with a caption that reads, “March 19, 2024 — Cheonan Institute for Spiritual Issues (Director: Senior Pastor of Cheonan Myeongmun Church of Christ) — The Yeorub Satan (shaman/sorcerer) shamanic ministry workers destroyed the shrine of the Taehwadang shaman, who had lived as a shaman for 20 years, after she accepted Jesus as the Christ.”

Since the video predates the Nepal floods, we can ascertain that the viral video is old.

We further found that the longer version of the same video is on the Shionam Myung Moon Church website, which is also linked to an 8-minute-34-second YouTube video published on March 20, 2024, with Korean captions.

Translation of the captions and on-screen text revealed that the footage was recorded on March 19, 2024, in Cheonan, South Korea. It shows a Taehwadang shaman, who had practised shamanism for 20 years, destroying his shamanic temple after converting to Christianity.

Hence, we can confirm that the viral video is old and has a relation with the Nepal floods.
