The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest drew widespread attention over alleged police excesses, including lathi-charges, mass detentions and injuries to students during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march.
The crackdown sparked criticism, prompting courts and the government to review cases against protesters.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged he was repeatedly threatened during the student protests and pressured to join the BJP to protect his family. Addressing reporters in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, he also accused the Centre of shielding rapists, targeting activists instead of addressing public concerns, and using intimidation to silence dissent.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a man is being assaulted by an angry mob. The video shows several people surrounding and attacking a man and has been widely shared on Instagram and YouTube with captions alleging that the incident occurred during the CJP demonstrations.
The video is shared with a caption claiming it shows a soldier being beaten for trying to sexually harass a student during the CJP protests in Delhi.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “Students thrashed the accused soldier for attempting to sexually assault a student in Delhi’s protest.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral video is from Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, where an NCC officer was thrashed for allegedly harassing a trainee.
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video is shared by Dainik Bhaskar on July 22. The video was shared with a caption suggesting that an NCC officer sexually harassed a student.
The report associated with the video suggests that a National Cadet Corps (NCC) officer was accused of sexually harassing a female student at a government school in the Maneri area of Uttarkashi.
The incident was also reported by Live Hindustan on July 24.
According to the report, during an NCC training session, the accused teacher told the victim that an NCC officer wanted to meet her. He then took her to the officer’s office, where both men allegedly sexually harassed her. The victim managed to escape and narrated her ordeal to her female teacher and family members. When the student’s family and locals learned of the incident, they gathered at the school and beat the accused. Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Maneri police station. The investigation is ongoing.
Hence, we can ascertain that the video is unrelated to the CJP protest and the viral claim is false.
