Fact Check: Video of people celebrating BJP’s win in West Bengal polls is T20 match celebrations

False. Viral video is from March and shows celebrations after India wins the ICC T20 match.

Post-poll violence erupted across West Bengal after the Assembly election results were declared on May 4. Clashes between supporters of the BJP and TMC were reported from several districts, leading to deaths, injuries, arson, vandalism, and attacks on party offices. The Election Commission ordered strict action, while over 200 FIRs were filed and hundreds arrested. Both parties accused each other of orchestrating the violence.

In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media in which people are seen dancing and celebrating on the street by raising Indian national flags and a saffron flag.

The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows people of West Bengal celebrating after the BJP’s win in the state polls.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “This video says a lot. People of West Bengal are celebrating the change of power and the farewell to TMC and Mamata Banerjee. No one has the flag of the winning party, the BJP, in their hands. In people’s hands, there is either the Tricolour or the saffron flag.” (Translated from Hindi)

Fact Check

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is from March 2026 and shows the celebration of India winning a T20 match.

On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an Instagram account on March 8. The video is shared with a text that reads, “Can it be possible that a celebration is going on in Prayagraj and this song is not played?”  The hashtag suggests that the video is of a World Cup celebration.

Using this information, we searched with relevant keywords and found that a similar video was shared on the YouTube channel on March 9. The caption read, “I’ve never seen anything like this! After India’s historic T20 World Cup win, I headed straight to Loknath, Prayagraj—the heart of the city’s madness. From ‘Kapda Faad’ energy to non-stop dhol, fireworks, and thousands of fans on the streets, Loknath turned into a sea of Blue and the Tricolour. If you think your city celebrated hard, wait until you see how Prayagraj does it!”

We checked for Loknath, Prayagraj, on Google Maps and can see a board with Suman Ornaments written in front of Baba Loknath Dwar. The board with the text Suman Ornaments is also seen in the viral video. Thus, suggesting that the viral video is of the T20 World Cup celebration.

We found that Times Now Sports had also shared the video of the celebration on its Facebook page on March 8. The caption read, “Massive celebrations erupt in Prayagraj as fans hit the streets after Team India’s historic victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.”
