The opposition accused the Election Commission and the ruling party of orchestrating ‘vote chori’ (vote theft), citing alleged manipulated voter rolls, fake addresses, duplicate entries and biased actions to tilt State elections in their favour.
In the above context, a video is being widely shared on social media. In the first part of the video, people are seen protesting outside the BJP office and in the second part, people are seen holding a candle march.
The video is shared with a caption suggesting that it shows people protesting against vote theft.
A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “#BJPHataoDeshBachao #VoteChor_GaddiChhod Now the public is waking up. The Modi government has made life difficult for the common man. Inflation, unemployment, GST and the dominance of goons on the streets. Where is an honest, simple citizen supposed to go?” (Translated from Hindi)
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The two clips in the video are old and unrelated to the Opposition’s allegations against the ECI.
Clip 1
On a Google reverse image search, we found that the same video was shared by an Instagram account on May 28.
According to the caption, the clip was from Chhattisgarh, where the Congress party was protesting for regular employment to MNREGA workers. Congress workers, under the leadership of Durg Rural District President Rakesh Thakur, surrounded the Collector’s Office and demanded that the BJP government give their rights to the workers. During the demonstration, slogans were raised against government policies. The hashtag suggests that the video was from Durg.
In the video, we can see that the board of the BJP office shows that the video was shot in Durg, Chhattisgarh. Moreover, a closer look at the banner on the autorickshaw has the text ‘Rozgar do’, i.e, provide employment.
Taking a hint, we searched with relevant keywords and found a report published by Amar Ujala on May 16.
According to the report, the Congress in Durg protested at the collectorate against a sharp reduction in MNREGA workdays, cutting the target from 42 lakh person-days to 18 lakh for 2025–26. The protest saw heavy police presence and barricades, and workers submitted a memorandum demanding a reversal and more MNREGA projects to boost rural livelihoods.
We found that the incident was also reported by ETV Bharat.
Clip 2
A Google reverse image search led us to the second clip shared by India News Bihar Jharkhand on December 6, 2024. The video was shared with a caption suggesting that it was from Delhi, where Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) aspirants were protesting against normalisation.
We further found a report by ETV Bharat, published on December 20, 2024.
According to the report, candidates were protesting the December 13 BPSC 70th preliminary exam, citing irregularities, delayed question papers (especially at Patna’s Bapu Pariksha Parisar), and demanding full cancellation instead of a partial re-test scheduled for just one centre.
Hence, we can ascertain that the claim is false.
