A post containing two distressing images of a woman giving birth in public on a road has gone viral on social media. Users sharing the images claim the incident took place in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The posts allege that the woman was denied admission at a government hospital because she could not pay, forcing her to deliver her baby on the street in the middle of the night.

A social media user shared the video with a caption that reads, “No money, no treatment. A government hospital turned away a sick mother, and she gave birth to her child right on the street in the middle of the night. This is a case of systemic negligence.”

SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The viral images show a woman giving birth on the road in Nepal.

On a Google reverse image search, we found a video shared by a Northeast India-based YouTube channel on September 11. In the video at around 5:42 timestamp, we can see the same scene as the viral video.

The video is shared with a caption that reads, “A CCTV video showing a woman giving birth by the roadside has gone viral on social media. The incident took place in Bajura district of Nepal. According to reports, the woman was identified as 26-year-old Kamala Bogati from Budhiganga Municipality–6, Bajura, Nepal. She reportedly went into labour while travelling towards her home. Before she could reach a health facility, she gave birth to a baby boy by the roadside. Both the mother and baby were reported to be in stable condition.”

We further found that the same video was also shared by a Nepal-based website, the Desh Sanchar, on August 26.

According to the report, the viral video shows the area outside Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital in Rajbiraj, Nepal. The woman, identified as Babita Kumari Paswan, was pregnant and was taken to the hospital by her family after she went into labour. Hospital staff asked her relatives to deposit money for tests, but the family did not have any. The hospital staff then refused to admit her, after which she gave birth to the child on the road.

Using this information, we searched with relevant keywords and found that the same video was shared by a news website, The Kathmandu Post.

According to the report, Babita Kumari Paswan gave birth on a pavement outside a government hospital in Saptari after her husband could not afford Rs 3,200 for mandatory tests. A preliminary inquiry found that staff failed to assess her condition properly. Six employees were suspended pending investigation.

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is false.
