Wildfires have been sweeping across California since January 7. The fire has killed 25 people leaving over 1.5 lakh displaced.
In the above backdrop, a video is being widely shared on social media in which a man is seen saving a rabbit while fire burns around them. Those sharing the video are linking it to the California fires.
A social media user shared the video and wrote, “This man saved a bunny from the Los Angeles fire.”
SouthCheck found that the claim is false. The video is not related to the ongoing fires in California. It has been on the internet since 2017.
On a Google reverse image search, we found the same video uploaded by BBC on December 7, 2017. The video was shared with a caption that reads, “Footage has captured the moment a man stopped his car to rescue a wild rabbit from wildfires in California. The incident took place on 101 Freeway in La Conchita. More than 150 homes have been destroyed in the Ventura area, near Los Angeles, and 50,000 people evacuated.”
The video was also uploaded by ABC 7 on December 7, 2017. The video report stated that the rabbit was saved by the man from the Thomas Fire along Highway 1 in La Conchita.
We found that Thomas Fire experienced a massive wildfire that affected Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The fire was sparked due to an electrical issue in December 2017 and was extinguished on January 12, 2018.
Hence, we conclude that the claim is false.
